Built Green

Green building refers to the use of simple, smart, sustainable building practices that reduce negative environmental impacts and provide healthy living. Home Resource Network of Seattle, Inc. (“HRN”) is fortunate to be working with many of Seattle’s finest eco-friendly contractors. From contractors who are working on introducing ‘shades of green’ into their already established business practices, to those who are well versed in, and have extensive knowledge of green building practices, HRN is well connected to a broad range of exceptional green contractors.

In addition, we at HRN are personally and professionally committed to educating ourselves in areas of green technologies and practices.

The benefits of green building are tangible and include personal satisfaction in having made smart choices leading to higher quality, reduced maintenance, greater value, lower operating costs, security and peace of mind. Homeowners who invest in green building and contractors who implement those practices are rewarded for and satisfied with their efforts.

Does Green Build Cost More? Not necessarily. Green materials are now readily available and many green materials cost less than in recent years. The initial costs of implementing green building can sometimes be more than standard building practices, but costs will often be recouped many times over, in the long-term, with savings generated by reductions in energy consumption and other green building benefits. Recycling on the jobsite, for instance, leads to smaller dump fees and less waste. Advanced, thoughtful framing practices require less lumber, less time and less money. Use of insulated concrete forms (ICF’s) in the foundation walls and structurally insulated panels (SIP’s) in the exterior walls are smart choices. Energy efficient appliances and systems cut cost and use fewer resources--financially and ecologically. In addition, built green homes are in demand and have a better resale value. Green building is about smart, long-term solutions.

Environmentally friendly choices are decisions to use products that avoid toxic or other emissions, those that save energy or water, products that conserve natural resources and those made with salvaged, recycled or agricultural waste content. Green building means proper use and application of products that contribute to a safe, healthy building and living environment. The materials used to produce a product, the conditions under which the product was made and where those materials came from are keys to green building. Is there a way to build smaller or more efficiently? Can you do more with less and higher quality materials?

Ask your contractor to investigate green options with you. You may just find yourself delighted and inspired by what you find. Throughout the process, celebrate the small steps. Tell others about your choices and share your enthusiasm.

HRN is committed to the promotion of green building and would be happy to talk with you about some eco-friendly choices and connect you to contractors also make green building a priority.

What is the LEED Rating system?  The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a third party certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED provides building owners and operators with tools they need to have an immediate and measurable impact on their building’s performance.

LEED is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high performance, sustainable buildings. LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state of the art strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resource selection and indoor air quality.

HRN can connect you with LEED accredited designers and Built Green affiliated contractors who are knowledgeable and have experience in and a commitment to green designing and building practices.

We look forward to working with you.
